A virtual meeting on Tuesday included opinions for and against rentals
POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – By a 5-1 vote, Poland’s village council decided to impose a moratorium on short-term rentals until at least December 31, 2021. This includes owners advertising or planning to advertise their properties on websites like Airbnb.
The move comes after owners Dan and Sunny Snedden announced the rental of their home in the 200 block of Diana Drive on Airbnb.
The moratorium will give the board time to decide how best to proceed with Airbnb rentals in the future.
A virtual meeting on Tuesday included opinions for and against the rentals.
“We put this in place because our region needs it,” Sunny said.
The Sneddens are looking to use their home as Airbnb before they can hopefully fully move in in June. They believe that using their home as Airbnb can be an asset for Poland.
“If we can help, we want to help. Our goal is to become a member of this community, ”said Dan.
“We understand the moratorium, we understand the permit issue, but I just want everyone to know this information in the future, that Airbnb is not a bad thing if it is working properly,” Sunny said.
Some at the meeting vouched for people they knew.
“I just know they would be a real asset to our neighborhood,” said Craig Summers, a friend of the Snedden’s.
Others in attendance were divided over whether the Snedden couple’s rights to use their property would significantly affect the safety and value of the neighborhood.
“These people have chosen to buy a property here and it is their property. They also have the right to do with it what they like to do, ”said neighbor Rob Dunham.
“We weren’t selected, and luckily we have good reviews, but if I remember correctly when we first used Airbnb, we didn’t have any reviews and we weren’t really selected. “said a resident of Poland.
“When you have foreigners coming in and going out regularly, whether good or bad, it changes the meaning of the neighborhood,” said another Polish resident.
Poland’s village council voted in favor of a moratorium on all short-term rentals until December 31.
“As complex as it may be, the simple fact today is, is there a permit? And the answer is no, ”said a Polish city councilor.
“We’re going to level it, we don’t want to level it down,” Sunny said.
