Gartner: Carbon Emissions Will Be Considered When Purchasing Cloud by 2025

By 2025, the carbon emissions of large-scale cloud services will be one of the top three criteria when buying cloud, according to research firm Gartner.

While environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities and reporting receive considerable attention, more than 90% of organizations have increased their investments in sustainability programs since the start of the pandemic compared to investments in 2017.

“Leading cloud infrastructure and platform services providers are increasingly focused on how they can disrupt higher-level business, compliance, societal and environmental issues,” notes Ed Anderson, vice president research at Gartner.

“Hyperscalers are aggressively investing in sustainable cloud operations and delivery, aspiring to ultimately achieve net zero emissions within a decade or even sooner. Gartner expects increased availability of tools that help organizations calculate and reduce carbon emissions through effective use of cloud services, similar to tools that help optimize cloud spend today,” said Anderson. .

The top 10 cloud providers (by revenue) accounted for 70% of all IT spending on cloud infrastructure, platform and application services, Gartner reported.

Major cloud providers will spearhead cloud sustainability initiatives, as they are also the largest data center operators in the world and are key to reducing IT-related carbon emissions.

“While virtually all cloud providers have sustainability initiatives in place, their progress in achieving carbon reduction goals and strategies to achieve net zero carbon emissions varies widely,” Anderson comments. “Sustainability metrics and workload placement tools are still immature and not always transparent, making it difficult for organizations to fully and accurately assess the true sustainability impacts of their cloud usage today. .”

“As stakeholders continue to push organizations to improve their sustainability posture, the most progressive suppliers will share their sustainability information publicly. Increasingly, stakeholder pressure will drive them to include in company disclosures, compliance and reporting.”

Gartner’s 2022 Board Survey showed that ESG issues were among the top strategic priorities for 32% of boards, representing a 100% increase in interest compared to survey 2021.
